Bulbs and Birch!

So this year, I got inspired to use alot of fresh, pre-sprouted bulbs as accents in decor for my Christmas Clients. Very earthy, and economically appealing. So, we created an installation around her Santa. This guy was so real looking, that I actually had to touch him. Birch Logs, piles of Bulbs and a variety of fresh plants made this vignette warm and cozy.

Her mantle was understated with a long massing of Bulbs, and two designs of Magnolia foliage and submerged Crab apples. Her elegant trees filled in the space between the arrangements, and added a touch glamour to the organic vibe.

The Dining Room Table was going to be used for the buffet, for her large party. We kept things really simple, carrying over the bulb and Birch theme, along with a pairing of silver Dusty Miller and Brunia Berries. It looked fantastic!!

Amina's Wedding!

We had a fun wedding this past weekend. The bride was very chic, but the venue was more traditional. What we created was a great juxtaposition of styles and not your ordinary set of centerpieces. We had three different styles of Table Designs. There were many tables, so we wanted to mix it up a little. The most unique and the most time consuming, were our Orb Designs. Three spheres in differing sizes...Hypericum Berries, Green Hydrangea, and the most time consuming--Fresh Rose Petals!
Although lovely and different, we are definitely charging more for those next time:)

Garden Roses

As a florist, I see many different flowers every day. One that stands out above the rest is the Garden Rose. It is not your typical standard rose (which are great also). These Garden Roses have so much more character with the stem and the full unique heads. They look like the ones that my grandmother would grow in the backyard, but larger. Often times, consumers will think they are old because of the firmness of the head, but that is only becuase of the high petal count. My most favorite thing about them is the fragrance. These are some of the most fragrant flowers we carry. We do not carry them all the time, but ask, we just might have some in stock.

Green Plant Month is Here!

Howdy!
Our store is full of really beautiful foliage right now! Bringing our Greenhouse indoors has been one challenge with awesome results. I personally love the way the store looks right now.

Between our bright and cheery summer cut arrangements, our lush and refreshing plant selection, and the featured paintings of a local artist displayed in store, I can't stop finding reasons to sneak out and have a look around. :)

I am also looking forward to a workshop that Curtis and I are hosting on Saturday, June 13th. Here in a moment I am going to be working up a demo patio/entryway planter that I will be using as an example for the class. Having such a large selection to work with is going to make it really fun and worth getting messy for!

Of course, I have an ever rotating list of favorite plants, and todays include:

Rex Begonia
Fabian Aralia

Prince of Orange Philodendron

and Rubber Plant

I am really excited about all we have going on this month at Dr Delphinium. I hope you all have a chance to come by and see what is in store this June!

Color of the Month-Turquoise

So, I know it's been awhile since my last post. So sorry... where does time go?

Color is once again the topic of the day, for a variety of reasons. Specifically, Spring has sprung...and is springing up some intense color palettes.

Turquoise and it's variations happens to be one of these bright colors. So many brides come to me wanting Turquoise in their wedding. The challenge becomes integrating this color into a palette, when there is nothing in the fresh floral world that really comes close to this true shade. So, we use props and other elements to pull the color through.

The top photo is an idea for an earthy chic wedding. These glass chunks, highlight the color. Succulents almost have a bluish hue, which works well with the rocks.

In these photos we are using the vase to add in our color accents. By pairing a contrasting hot pink, with our blues, we are adding something unexpected.

With this design, we wrapped the vase in a perfect Purple/Turquoise ribbon. This added in our color, paired with a more soothing green and white combination.

Here's a thought, when there is no time or budget for flowers. Just color the water!! This is a darker Blue, but certainly doable for a Turquoise look.
When working with Turquoise or any other random colors that might be difficult. Just know there are many ways to pull in different color accents. The key is to keep it simple and don't try and over do it.

Lowery Wedding Part 3

This is the final, long-awaited installment for the finished wedding! We have our wintery, white Ceremony, complimented by brilliantly intense, eye-popping color with the Reception. It was fun to work with such an extreme palette. It made for a really unique environment. Yaay! I'll start with the ceremony....

The newly draped room, is now completely full of orchid covered Birch Branches, and a massive iron structure, over flowing in Hawaiian Dendrobium Stems. Extra up-lighting, and floating candles give the room ambiance and glow.

A two dimensional Rose sphere complements the Place Card Table.

This gorgeous swagging marks the entrance to the ceremony. Opposite this room is an open foyer that leads to the reception area.

Hanging Crystals and exotic Orchid plants are displayed on Manzanita Branches.

You can never go wrong with too many candles!

Silver Beaded Chargers, Grey Bengaline Napkins, and Menus, add detail to the table top.

Vibrant Shades of Raspberry, paired with earthy silver hues make these collection centerpieces really pop in the room. The pin-spot lighting really helped the Fuchsia Rose Spheres glow!

Lowery Wedding Part 2

Friday night we started the initial set-up. The ceremony room was to be draped around 10:00am. We were all surprised by how much smaller the room was. We knew it would be tiny, but it was even smaller than remembered. Also, the room had been filled with leftover wine glasses, tables, other odds and ends. This poor room had basically been used for temporary storage, which inhibited the draping process and took longer than expected.

The Silver Chiavari Chairs for the reception had arrived! They had to be stored in this room also, which made space a precious commodity.

Originally, the ceiling was going to be completely draped. However, the logistics of the room were such that draping the entire ceiling would take away too much head space. So sad, because it would have looked beautiful. However, the fantastic guys from Quest Drape made some innovative changes and transformed the ceiling into a billowing mass of sheer fluff:)

The finished Ceremony Room!

This lovely pic denotes the extremely skinny hallways to and from the ballroom. These led from the load-in area, through the kitchens and up to the ballrooms. We had to take these tight spaces into consideration when planning the execution of this event. Our motto..."Take more people, and get there way early"!!

Lowery Wedding Part 1

This wedding by far has been one of my all time favorites, that we have accomplished here at Dr.Delphinium. Not just because of the spectacular venue, amazing designs, and complete over-the-topness, but this was really and truly one of my nicest brides as well. A lovely person with fantastic taste.

I wanted to really document well with photos, just to give a taste of the amount of work that goes into an event of this scale.

Tuesday of every week begins the intense preparation. To start us off, the glass that had been pulled weeks ago for all of the centerpieces, was staged to re-create our soon to be centerpieces.

All of these vases represent one centerpiece!!

This is the completed Centerpiece, put together so that we have a prototype to duplicate.

Julie, Lizzie, and Kim are working hard on the Altar Structure. This 8' tall metal frame will be the base supporting white branches and a mass of showy White Dendrobium Orchids, creating an inspired Wintry Look. All the branches are placed beforehand, to cut back on time once we are on-site.

This design was designated for the Sign in Table, sort of a two-layered Sphere of Roses and Dahlias.

The Peonies that we had originally ordered were unavailable in the specific shade that we needed, so the bride graciously allowed us to substitute with Ranunculus. This is a gorgeous bloom that really looks like a mini Peony. Of course, as with everything...there is always another challenge to face...particularly the Ranunculus coming in really right and immature. Solution? Place in the sun for a few hours, to let the sunlight naturally open the blooms.

All of the Hot Pink Roses have arrived. Thank goodness:)

Another minor drama involved all of our Phalaenopsis Orchids. Valentines Day had really dried the market dry of this particular color. Fortunately, I was able to pull what we had in stock already, which amounted to half of what we needed. We were then able to pull in a dark Fuchsia Purple Dendrobium, which in all actuality added a rich hue to the overall palette.

Here's our ever-growing stack of stuff to be packed. We planned to take all of the hardgoods on Friday night, that way we could take over our first load early on Saturday morning.
